However, the opposite is true for inbound links.  Inbound links are other web sites that link to you.  Search engines like inbound links and place an high importance on them, provided they originate from credible sites.

The more inbound links you have, the better.

Inbound linking is essentially a very manual, time consuming process that few individuals or organizations want to undertake.  It can take hours of work.  But it is a necessary exercise to assure higher search engine rankings.
